Jerold M. Wassel, OD
Dr. Jerold (Jerry) Wassel has been in practice since 1979. After spending two years as an Optometric Clinical Instructor in a downtown Baltimore City eye clinic, and the next two years on staff with the Baltimore City Health Department, he opened his office in Jarrettsville in May 1984. The practice grew along with the community for the next 30 years. After purchasing the Bircham Food Market from its retiring owner, Dr. Wassel built the present Bircham Medical Center, currently housing three medical practices. His special interests include pediatric vision and reading skills, and specialized contact lens fitting.
Dr. Wassel is a member of the American Public Health Association, the American Optometric Association, and the Maryland Optometric Association, and is proud of the clinical and public service awards he has received from these groups. He is past-President of both the Northeast MD Optometric Society, and the Greater Baltimore Optometric Society. Currently, he is MD State Administrator for Vision Source, a national network of over 2500 Optometric Practices dedicated to the promotion of public vision welfare and high clinical standards.
Dr. Wassel has been married since 1978 to his wife Shelbie, and has two daughters, Dani and Molly. He enjoys traveling, photography, tennis, and talking Ravens football.
Lois Phipps, Practice Administrator/Senior Optometric Technician
Ms. Lois Phipps’ title is Practice Administrator, but Lois is actually the face of the practice. Lois grew up in Jarrettsville—-actually on the same road and just a few houses down from the office, and has been serving her patients here for almost 30 years since December 1987. In addition, Lois has taken over the position as Senior Optometric Technician and enjoys explaining to patients her interpretation of their glaucoma, peripheral field, and neurological testing results. Lois’ second favorite job is being grandmother to her two grandsons, Ethan and Levi.
Jill Mulqueen, Practice Optical Administrator
Ms. Jill Mulqueen has been Senior Optician and Optical Manager since 2003. She has used her experience of over 26 years in the Optical Profession to give a look to the Optical side of our office the likes of which the community has never seen – combining classic styles with fun interpretations. Everyone comments on Jill’s smile and how her sense of humor lightens their day. Jill says her daughters, Jordan and Alex, keep her constantly on the run.
Terry Muzii, Certified Optician/Optometric Technician
Ms. Terry Muzii is a Certified Optician, with over 19 years experience in the Dispensing Optical field. Terry loves patients who present her with challenges, whether it’s a strong Rx and for a patient who wants thin lenses, kids who are active in sports and need correction, or someone with a sensitive nose bridge. Terry can take care of anyone. Even contact lens patients with “five thumbs”. Terry is married to her husband, Eric.
Pam Madden, Certified Optician
Ms. Pam Madden is an ABO Certified Optician. Pam comes to the practice with over 27 years of experience in the optical field…including managing a large retail optical business for the past 15 years. She enjoys the rapport with her patients, especially kids. Pam has been happily married for almost 30 years to her husband Paul, and they are parents to April and Paul. She enjoys long walks with the family dogs, Baily and Toby, and family trips to the beach.
Margaret (Peggy) Liberatore Castagna,
Optometric Technician/Patient Relations
Peggy joined the practice in June 2012, after 26 years in fundraising, organizing special events, and managing volunteer programs in the education and healthcare fields. Her experience working with people in these areas helps her to better understand and assist patients, and make them more at ease as they go through their pre-testing procedures. Peggy has been married for over 38 years to John, and has three daughters, three grandsons, and two rescue dogs. She enjoys getting together with friends and family and volunteering for various non-profits.
Catherine Showalter,
Patient Relations Liaison
Catherine is the newest member of our family, joining us in 2014. She comes to us after 13 years of running her own bridal business. Catherine is very active in the local community, serving on the local girl’s lacrosse board, and volunteering at the local elementary school. Having been a long time patient of the practice, she has enjoyed seeing that the staff really does have as much fun as they appear. Catherine enjoys spending time with her husband, Dwayne, and their two children, Tanner and Reese who keep her very busy.
Catherine (Catie) Molyneaux, Frame Stylist & Contact Lens Coordinator
Catie joined the Jarrettsville Family EyeCare team in early 2014. She comes with a strong background in management and customer service. She has a keen eye for trending styles and always enjoys helping her patients find their wilder side of optical fashion. Catie likes the family atmosphere she found here, and in her down time enjoys baking and working on her almost-100 year old house. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Ryan, and their two corgis Petey and Ruby. All three of which keep Catie on her toes.
Tricia Hava, Billing Coordinator/Patient Advocate
For any insurance or billing issues, calls to Ms. Trish Hava are answered quickly, politely, accurately, and with a smile. Trish and her family have been patients for many years and Trish handles billing for several medical practices through her own home-based company. We are fortunate to have this talented woman in-house to take care of our patients’ complex financial needs.
